WHAT IS AS-RS STORAGE?

The AS-RS storage stands for Automated storage and retrieval systems, meaning automatic storage and retrieval systems. The AS-RS storage includes a racking system combined with an automatic crane system to import and export goods. A special feature of AS-RS is that the system is highly designed, making the most of warehouse height.

In principle, AS-RS is like a selective shelf. Thereby, people replace manual forklifts with automatic crane systems. The AS-RS must still have the crane entry space as for a forklift as the occupant area is much smaller. Besides, due to the import and export of goods made by cranes, the height of shelves can be raised to the maximum.

OPERATION PRINCIPLE

If designed to add an automatic conveying system, the AS-RS warehouse absolutely does not need people to operate in the warehouse. All import and export stages are controlled by software. This is extremely suitable in cold storage, freezing storage.

When pallets are stored, the system will manage all information related to that pallet through the identifier. Upon delivery, the system also locates the pallet itself through this code. In addition to managing the location, the system can also manage shelf or shipping schedules.

ADVANTAGES AND WEAKNESS OF AS-RS STORAGE

The AS-RS warehouse has a difference compared to the Pallet Flow in that it is suitable for warehouses with many SKU. This is the downside of Pallet Flow. However, due to the mechanical operation, the maintenance costs are also higher.

In fact, it is possible to combine AS-RS with pallet flow or shuttle rack depending on the case. For example, in the case of beverage factory A, there are more than 100 SKUs in a warehouse. Each regular SKU stores around 4-5 pallets. Thus, one can put 4-5 units pallet flow combined with an automatic crane. This can reduce up to 2-3 walkways and crane systems.

This form of shelves is often applied in the warehouses of food manufacturers, seafood, beer, soft drinks, cold storage and freezing warehouses. Especially suitable for large cargo distribution centers.

A very famous warehouse in Vietnam using AS-RS is Vinamilk’s milk warehouse in Binh Duong.

Advantages

MANUFACTURRING AND INSTALLATION

Truss frame system is run on specialized rolling machines, powder coated or galvanized as required. Rack made in Vietnam.

Crane systems are imported from Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, China or Germany.

The installation of the AS-RS system is somewhat complicated because it involves electric-powered machines. Even the installation of large projects is carried out in parallel with the construction of warehouses. After the foundation of the warehouse is completed, the AS-RS system has been completed, people have just erected the steel frame of the factory. The installation process requires a good combination of installation and plant management.
